1803 Transportation of Convicts

The first convicts arrived at Risdon Cove with the settling party led by John Bowen in 1803. The first shipload of convicts to come directly from England arrived on the Indefatigable in 1812. Initially convicts were normally assigned to work for free settlers when they arrived and only went to penal settlements such as Port Arthur if they committed another offence in the colony. After 1840 all convicts completed a period of probation at a probation station on their arrival. If they behaved for the full period of their probation they were then assigned to a free settler. Transportation to Tasmania was abolished in 1853. Between 1803 and 1853 over 67 000 convicts were transported to Tasmania from Britain and her colonies. Almost one quarter of these convicts were from Ireland.
